CARMEN KOTT: A Season of Renewal: Embracing Change and Growth

MANISTEE, MICH. -  As the days grow longer, the air warms, and the first blooms of spring color the landscape, our community stands at a moment of renewal—not just in nature, but in leadership. Spring has always been a season of transformation, a time to embrace fresh beginnings. In the same way, I have entered a new season of my own, as this is my first spring as President & CEO of the Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce.

New leadership provides an opportunity to reflect, recalibrate, and reinvigorate our shared efforts to support local businesses, drive economic growth, and strengthen community ties. While sometimes unsettling, change in leadership is a natural part of any community’s growth. It's normal to feel a sense of unease when something we’ve known and trusted for so long shifts. After all, we’ve built relationships and shared experiences that have shaped who we are today. But it’s important to remember that this change is not about leaving behind what we’ve valued—it’s about bringing new energy, perspectives, and ideas that will help us reach even greater heights. It's like the weather: we never stay in one season forever.

As President & CEO of the Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce, I am committed to honoring the past while also guiding us toward the future with vision and purpose. Change invites us to renew our focus, challenge ourselves, and find new ways to thrive. The Chamber plays a crucial role in shaping the future of our local economy. It serves as the backbone of business advocacy, a catalyst for networking, and a hub for entrepreneurial growth. An active, forward-thinking Chamber fosters a thriving business environment—one that creates jobs, promotes economic stability, and enhances the local experience with vibrant shops, restaurants, and services close to home. Through policy advocacy, networking events, and championing local enterprises, the Chamber helps shape a stronger, more dynamic community.

In the months ahead, consider engaging with the Chamber, attending events, and supporting initiatives that uplift local businesses. The more we invest in our community—whether by shopping locally, mentoring emerging entrepreneurs, or spreading the word about great businesses—the stronger and more connected our local economy will become.

This season is a call to action—an opportunity to renew our commitment to our town’s economic and social well-being. When days slowly turn to summer, we don't keep wearing our winter coats: we change into an outfit that better suits the sunny days. Similarly, let us continue to change for our community as its needs adapt and grow. While new direction brings fresh possibilities, lasting success depends on collective effort. By working together, embracing innovation, and fostering inclusivity, we can ensure our community thrives this season and in years to come.

Here’s to a season of renewal, new leadership, and the continued growth of our vibrant community!
