Leadership Program GovAffairs Business Awards Ambassadors

Your Chamber recognizes that for many of our members, keeping track of the latest legislative development is nearly impossible. One of the greatest benefits of being part of the Chamber is our legislative advocacy at every level of government.

Throughout the year, Chamber staff, the Government Affairs Committee and the Board of Directors proactively track issues that might impact business at the local, state and federal levels.  We aim to inform our members of these matters and let the voice of the business community be heard.

The Government Affairs Committee meets on a monthly on the 1st Thursday of the month.  If you have an issue, concern or would like the committee to research something please contact the Chamber.

Your Chamber is a Full Partner in the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance which advocates at the legislative level for Northern Michigan businesses. Click here to stay up to date on the legislative hearings and priorities for our area.

Chamber Push Helps Shelve Road Salt Bill
The Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance joined other groups around Michigan in staving off a road salt bill in the State House that could have driven up the cost for road salt used by road commissions across Northern Michigan, and eliminated hundreds of jobs at Northern Michigan dock, trucking and aggregate companies that haul the product across the region. Government Relations Director Kent Wood alerted the public to this poorly crafted legislation last month in an editorial page forum published in the Traverse City Record-Eagle.

You can help stop this legislation by contacting your state legislator today.

‘Right-Sized’ Housing Solutions Offered to MHSDA
Development of workforce housing is a challenge to communities across Northern Michigan. The Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance is engaged in important discussions with the Michigan State Housing Development Authority on procedural changes at the state level to create additional options and resources for state-assisted housing development, specifically in rural areas of Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.

As a follow up to meetings in Lansing last month, Chamber presidents from across northern Michigan submitted a letter last week to MSHDA Director Earl Poleski addressing several programs at the state level for local housing development including Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) procedures, walk score requirements, developer qualifications and others.

Summer Update from Senator Jack Bergman:

"The month of August was a busy time for me and my staff, and I wanted to give you a quick look into what I have been doing over the Congressional District work period as well as provide some insight into some of the legislation we have been working on in Washington D.C. Meeting with constituents all throughout the Upper Peninsula and Northern Lower has definitely been the highlight of my time back in the District. From touring the White Pine Copper Mine to visiting the great folks at Grand Traverse Industries, I had the privilege to talk with constituents from all walks of life about the issues that matter most to them."
